Household Trash

Normal everyday household trash (kitchen/bathroom, etc.) is free and goes in the Trash Compactor. However, this does not apply to large loads (like Spring cleaning) or bulky items (furniture, scrap wood, etc.); there is a charge for these, see the table below.

Please pay attention to the prohibited items listed on the sign on the compactor. Some items may need to go in the Construction Bin, see below.

Paper & Cardboard Recycling

Most paper and cardboard can go in the Paper Bin. Please familiarize yourself with What’s Recyclable. There are also magnets on the container with lists, as well as a big sign in fron of the bottles bin. (Breaking down your boxes means we can fit more in, which means fewer hauling trips, which saves everyone money!)

Bottles, Cans, and Containers Recycling

Most glass, plastic, and metal containers and similar items can go in the Container Bin, but not all. Please familiarize yourself with What’s Recyclable. There are also magnets on the container with lists, as well as a big sign in front of the container. Please leave your 5-cent returnables in a bucket on the deck. (Crushing your plastic containers and metal cans means we can fit more in, which means fewer hauling trips, which saves everyone money!)

Batteries & Light Bulbs

Rechargeable batteries, car batteries, fluorescent & LED bulbs, mercury thermostats, and other similar items with hazardous components need to be disposed of separately. There is no charge. Please give to the attendant on duty. (Traditional alkaline batteries and incandescent light bulbs can go in the trash compactor.)

Metal Items

Miscellaneous metal items go in the Metal Bin for recycling. Most items are free; but bulky appliances and such will be charged for depending on current prices for recycled metals.

Construction Debris

Items that go into the construction bin will be charged at $ 0.25 per pound.

Mattresses

Residents are encouraged to take mattresses to be disposed directly to Casella at the Lenox Valley Transfer Station in Lenox Dale, where you will be charged only a $55 fee. Otherwise, mattresses that we accept at the Transfer Station will get charged a fee of $125 a piece, because that is what we will be charged to dispose of them per new DEP rules.

Tires

We can no longer accept tires of any kind at the Transfer Station, due to MA DEP regulations. Most tire distributors generally accept old tires for disposal. There may be a fee for this.

Used Motor Oil & Antifreeze

These items can be disposed of for free. There are separate containers for each in the bin at the back of the yard. These cannot be contaminated with any water.

TVs & Electronics

These items must be put into one of the boxes inside the Electronics container. A fee will be charged based on size & approximate weight.

Clothing

Clean, reusable clothing can be placed in the blue donation bin on the right just past the entrance gate. Please put items in plastic bags for easy transport to a donation center.

Transfer Station Fees

Below is a partial list of the most common items that are charged a fee for disposal. Non-household trash (spring cleaning, construction waste, furniture etc.) will be assessed a fee of $0.10 per lb based on estimated weight if small enough to fit into compactor (4 feet) - otherwise it will cost $0.25 per lb to go into the construction bin.

Please be responsible for yourself and your trash and come prepared to pay (check or cash).
